This is a vessel. It was designed by Neri Oxman and MIT Media Lab Mediated Matter Group.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It has been able to spend time at the museum on loan from Neri Oxman.
A scalloped contour gradually smooths and grows smaller to create a dome-like structure in this piece from Oxman’s 3D-printed GLASS series. Each piece in the series is built up from tubes of molten glass, layer by layer, yielding optically transparent structures. The tubular forms have the potential to contain and transmit media. This new technique has enormous potential for creating vessels and products as well as architectural components and building facades. The technique was unveiled by Oxman and her Mediated Matter group in September, 2015.
