This is a Pavilion. It was designed by Heatherwick Studio and Thomas Heatherwick. It is dated 1991–1992.
Can a student make a real building?
While studying design at Manchester Polytechnic, Heatherwick explored applying the ideas and craftsmanship usually devoted to small objects, such as chairs, to the larger scale of a building. He explored architectural forms compact enough to build himself, such as Victorian-era gazebos, before designing this pavilion. With a pitched roof that twists down to join the walls, the pavilion required Heatherwick to invent a glazing system of clear panels held together with screws, rubber sealing, and Velcro. The project — conceived as temporary yet on permanent display in Sussex— embodies the innovation and determination inherent to Heatherwick’s creative process.
