Sidewall, Golden Lily
This is a sidewall. It was designed by John Henry Dearle and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1899 and we acquired it in 1935. Its medium is block-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
John Henry Dearle’s pattern Golden Lily was included in a sample book of Morris & Co. papers that proudly detailed their production process: “HAND-PRINTED PAPERS are produced very slowly, each block used being dipped into pigment and then firmly pressed on to the paper, giving a great body of colour.” These steps would have been repeated separately for each color in this richly layered pattern.
