Box

This is a box. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1966. Its medium is molded and carved tortoiseshell inlaid with silver and mother of pearl. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This oval tortoiseshell box features inlaid scenes of workshops on top and underside. The scenes are likely derived from a print source. Artisans are shown heating and bending what appears to be horn and flattening it with a large screw press.

This object was donated by Estate of Harry G. Friedman. It is credited Gift of the Estate of Harry G. Friedman.

A small vanity case in the form of a Roman arch with a rounded top, flat bottom and thin depth attached to a diamond oval horizontal opening on top linked to two diamond loops set front to back that rest on a short wide “U” element on a chain with four evenly spaced rock crystal fluted balls. A gold line outlines the top and bottom edges and hinges of the case. There are small round diamonds mostly evenly spaced around the border with three slightly larger round diamonds isolated at the top and centrally located on both sides. A black and gold thumbpiece meets the top diamond. A rectangular octagon horizontally and centrally located outlined with round diamonds contains a mother of pearl insert with three carved putti. Fan-like diamond elements sit atop and below the central design and a fleur de lis anchors the two diamond borders that rendezvous in the bottom middle border. The photograph captures the object from above with the top facing left of center in an isometric view with the face of the case, bottom and left sides exposed against a white ground with a cast shadow.
