Vase (USA)

This is a vase. It was manufactured by Rookwood Pottery and decorated by Kataro Shirayamadani. It is dated 1888 and we acquired it in 1967. Its medium is glazed and hand-painted earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Although often associated with the simplicity of the Arts and Crafts movement, Rookwood Pottery produced richly painted, decorative wares. The company’s style was inspired by European and Japanese aesthetics, and foreign decorators were often hired. Shirayamadani, a Japanese expatriate, produced this vase for Rookwood, combining a more graphic Japanese aesthetic with Rookwood’s naturalistic motifs and color palette.
