Circular snuff box Circular Snuff Box

This is a Circular snuff box. It was made by Claude Pierre Pottier. It is dated 1779 and we acquired it in 1967. Its medium is stamped and rolled gold, cut opalescent glass, metallic foil. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

A rectangular vanity case painted in deep blue enamel bordered by a straight row of small diamonds on both ends with a border of small black enamelled curved designs in repetition on both edges of the front. A unique circular medallion form, vertically oriented, encased in a diamond circle possesses a robustly formed coral flower revealing luscious petals adorned with cabochon emerald pistils. Thickly-carved leaves of lapis lazuli conform to the flower overlapping a black enamel ground. A centered metal thumbpiece is partially seen on the side. The vanity case could fit into the palm of your hand. The photograph captures the object from atop and a side reflecting a dark gray cast shadow on a white surface.

Rectangular mottled-green jadeite box with central striated rock crystal column terminating at bottom in a lapis lazuli arrow motif carved with roses, and diamond accents. The jadeite varies in shade from light brown-green to deep forest green. The beige-colored rock crystal and deep blue lapis lazuli make a striking contrast. The rock crystal column is set with diamonds at top and bottom; those at the bottom frame an angular black onyx stone. The arrow wraps around the front edge of the box, with a short band of diamonds on the front side. A round diamond is set near each side of the front surface. The box sits on a softly reflective white surface.

A small, flattened disc-shaped container with painted imagery. The bottom portion of the container is a smooth dark brown, whose only decoration is a slim gold toned rim. The top cover contains a painted pastoral scene in muted colors of green, beige, brown and grey. The painting fills the entire circular surface. A large leafy tree anchors the composition and is placed slightly off center and to the right. Beneath the tree are two figures, one seated and one standing, engaged in conversation. In the middle left hand side of the painting is a portion of a stone building with an arched doorway framed by two classical pillars. Slightly in front of the doorway is a four-wheeled covered carriage with three windows and pulled by four horses, which are shown in silhouette. In the distance is a faint depiction of another building. The sky is rendered with dense low clouds and blue skies above. At the bottom of the scene, in the foreground, is a small cluster of greenery with two short vertical wood stumps jutting upward.

A black circular brooch with a gritty ground texture decorated with six irregualry shaped gold squares with smooth surfaces arranged in two groups of three crescents at the upper left and lower right quadrants. The group on the lower right is dominated by a larger square with somewhat wavy edges. All of the other squares, though distinctive in their rough edges, are of roughly the same size, and appear to float in the black ground in relation to each other.
