Sidewall (England)

This is a Sidewall. It is dated 1870–85 and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is blockprinted paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Images of bamboo appeared on Chinese export wallpapers beginning in the 17th century, which inspired Western manufacturers to use bamboo motifs to instill an Asian aesthetic in their designs.

This object was donated by Harvey Smith. It is credited Gift of Harvey Smith.
