Club Chair Armchair And Cushion

This is a Armchair and cushion. It was designed by Jean-Michel Frank. We acquired it in 1968. Its medium is wood, leather. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Jean-Michel Frank became a favorite French designer among wealthy American designers and clients alike. This desk and club chair probably first were in Mr. and Mrs. Forsythe Sherfesee’s Paris apartment decorated by American Eyre de Lanux, who often worked with Frank, and subsequently used at Villa Bontoc, their ca. 1927 house in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. In 1929 Vogue featured the San Francisco penthouse created by Frank for Templeton Crocker, calling it “the first large and luxurious apartment to be done completely in the modern manner in the United States.”

This object was donated by Forsythe Sherfesee and Mrs. Forsythe Sherfesee.
