Dining Chair, from the Purkersdorf Sanatorium Dining Chair

This is a dining chair. It was designed by Josef Hoffmann and manufactured by J & J Kohn and made for Purkersdorf Sanatorium, Vienna. It is dated 1904–1905 and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is beechwood, leather, metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Hoffmann worked from the principle of unity in architecture, interior decoration, and furniture. The circular cutouts in the chair back and the wood balls in the crook of the legs relate to circles in textiles and wallcoverings. The round holes also provide ventilation and make the chair light enough to be moved easily.

It is credited Museum purchase from Combined Funds and through gift of Crane and Co..
