Darning Sampler (England)

This is a Darning sampler. It was embroidered by Mary Elsden. It is dated 1809 and we acquired it in 1976. Its medium is silk on wool and its technique is embroidery stitches are stem, herringbone, satin and darning stitches on plain weave foundation. squares of the foundation fabric have been cut away at the center of each darning cross. the four corner crosses are plain weave, the others are basket, twill. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Unknown. It is credited Gift of Anonymous Donor from the Fraser/Martin Collection.
