Lapel Watch Watch

This is a watch. It was designed by Paulding Farnham and made by Tiffany and Co.. It is dated ca. 1889 and we acquired it in 1979. Its medium is gold, enamel, diamonds. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In 1889, designer Paulding Farnham’s enameled and bejeweled orchids for Tiffany
& Co. created a sensation at the Paris Exposition Universelle. The choice of orchids
coincided with these flowers being sought for the gardens of the wealthy, who
were also the jewelry firm’s patrons. Designers consulted botanical texts at the
studio and made watercolor sketches to devise life-like enameling schemes. The
book Orchids and How to Grow Them in India and Other Tropical Climates, found in
the studio’s library, likely served as a reference for the design of this jewelry

A rectangular vanity case with bright pink enamel stripes at the sides, which are outlined with thin black enamel strips, and set with round diamonds, accented by baguette diamonds. Along the top center runs a stripe of cream enamel with a gold floral design. At the top end of this stripe there a small, square, cream watch face, with black Arabic numerals and gold hour and minute hands. The watch face is outlined with small round diamonds. The sides of the case are set with alternating rock crystal and amethyst segments, accented with baguette diamonds. There is a small, diamond button clasp on the bottom edge of the case.
