Sidewall, The Orange Tree

This is a sidewall. It was designed by Walter Crane and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1902 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is block-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

It is credited Gift of Dr. Francis J. Geck.

Clear glass vase-shaped carafe with long flared neck widening into round belly, then narrowing into flared foot. The carafe is painted with plants and flowers. At the foot, an X pattern of red-brown stems leads up into green-gold blades of foliage on the belly. At the base of the neck, a collar of white and gold five-petal flowers, with round green leaves. At the rim, a scalloped and dotted gold design.

This small, square doily, with long fringes on all sides, has an ivory linen warp (top and bottom fringe) and a gray-green silk weft (left and right fringe). A reclined figure sitting in a bed of leaves dressed as a daisy with long-stemmed daisies surrounding , and the word DAISY in the upper right corner, all appearing in ivory on a gray-green ground. Along the edge of the doily is a frame made of repeated curved leaves and dots.
