Drawing, Design for a Salon with Blue Chairs and Mauve Carpet

This is a Drawing. It is dated 1930s and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is brush and gouache, graphite on heavy cream paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

It is credited Museum purchase from James Amster Fund.

A moody gelatin silver (black-and-white) print of a living room corner subtly lit by a large window on the right side. The corner is offset slightly to the right of the photograph, which includes a large portion of the paneled floor in the foreground. The high, two-toned walls feature a light color in the upper third with walnut below, divided by a simple wood hanging rail. Varnished walnut sliding doors -punctuate the wall on the center-left. A lone tufted stool, decorated with geometric designs, sits in the middle of the floor space. A cushioned recliner sofa holds numerous tossed pillows, above which are three wall-mounted prints. Diagonally kitty-corner to the sofa is a horizontal, shelved cabinet in varnished walnut, on top of which rests a light-colored vase with flowers. A large freestanding cone speaker and antenna rests on the opposite end of the cabinet containing the radio set; assorted bric-à-brac fill the shelves. Along the bottom border, 'interiors' is stamped in all capitol letters, next to which is handwritten 'Living rooms - France' - likely in pencil.
