Cigarette Holder (USA)

This is a Cigarette Holder. It was made by Chase Brass & Copper Co.. It is dated 1930–40 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is polished chromium, plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Mel Byars. It is credited Gift of Mel Byars.

Six matching tabletop sets. Each set is on a translucent rectilinear tray with coral balls for feet. Gold studs drilled into the tray hold the coral in place. The corners of the tray are rounded and on each tray are two upright rectangular nephrite slabs into which four holes have been drilled. Each of four cigarettes fits into the holes. The nephrite is held in place near the bottom with a long smooth bolt that has a large head. Each slab has a thin gold band near the top that goes around it. Just below the band is a small tube-set cabochon ruby. There is space behind the slab for a place card to go.

Gold cigarette case. The design is on a diagonal and is a repetition of black chevrons and squares. The short side of the case has diamonds on each outer corner set in a square.

Gold cigarette case made to look like a rectangular envelope. The very thin and close lines on the outside may possibly have been etched into the rubbed gold that makes up the case. There is a Persian minaret or palmette with an enamel design at the point of the lid, where the cigarettes case is to be opened. Four cabochon sapphires are on the minaret and the inside is lined in gold with a gold bar on each half of inside to hold the cigarettes in place.
