Chanin Building Gate, 1928

This is a gate. It was designed by René Paul Chambellan. It is dated 1928 and we acquired it in 1993. Its medium is wrought iron, bronze. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

René Paul Chambellan designed these gates for the entrance to the executive office suite of the Chanin Building in New York. The radiating-ray design, which connects to Futurism and Cubism, is surrounded by decorative machine cogs, bringing industrial motifs into interiors a year after New York’s Machine-Age Exposition of 1927.

This object was donated by Mr. Marcy Chanin. It is credited Gift of Marcy Chanin.

Lithographic poster ad in landscape orientation for the Parisian gallery of ironsmith Edgar Brandt. At the top of the poster, three lines of black, all uppercase letters read “Galerie / Edgar Brandt / 27 Boulevard Malherbes Paris”. The name EDGAR BRANDT dominates the upper section and its letters are highlighted with bead-like motifs that recall a decorative element used in wrought iron designs. At the center of the poster, a square frame contains an opulent motif of decorative ironwork, with two curved leaves symmetrically supporting three fan-like stylized flowers resembling a papyrus motif, of which the central one is largest. This curvilinear wrought iron motif is balanced on either side by an alphabetical list of names of over 30 designers represented in the gallery that includes for instance Daum and Lalique. At the bottom of the poster, one last line of text reads “Art décoratif contemporain” (contemporary decorative arts). The text and image are superimposed over curving light brown stylized floral and leaf line drawings that fill out the background and recall decorative elements of metalwork designs. The poster text, illustration and background reflect elegance.

Heart shaped necklace with a pendant constructed from metal wheels, hands and springs of a clock with a set of wings with openwork that resembles feathers attached on the front of the pendant. The metal wire attached to the pendant is a different metal from the pendent and the clasp is a toggle and loop with extra wire hanging from each side of the clasp. A rectangular wooden storage box, separate miniature key and separate tag are part of the jewelry ensemble.
