Vase Vase

This is a vase. It was decorated by Caroline Virginia (Rich) McGuffey and manufactured by Rookwood Pottery. It is dated 1882 and we acquired it in 1983. Its medium is earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

It is credited Gift of Dona Guimaraes in memory of Sarah McGuffey.

An amber-colored vase with circular base. Above the stem, the vase begins narrowly and becomes steadily wider until it reaches the top. The base and bottom third are a dark amber, The top two thirds are a lighter variety of white and cream. Trees grow upward from the dark amber bottom and pierece the light and yellow sky at the top.

A tall glass vase with flared concave sides, thick rounded rim, and rounded bottom. The vase is painted with a landscape of delicate white and black birch trees. The vivid green lawn is bounded at the far end with a line of sparse dark green bushes along a body of pale green-grey water. Horizontal blue-grey lines beneath the distant blue-grey trees beyond suggest reflections. The pale grey-blue sky above is spotted with pink. At the rim of the vase, the trees painted on the reverse side are visible through the glass.
