No. 196 Centerpiece Bowl

This is a Centerpiece Bowl. It was designed by Johan Rohde and manufactured by Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie. It is dated designed 1916, made ca. 1955 and we acquired it in 1984. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

From 1923 on, Georg Jensen had a New York shop promoting his simple, elegant forms. Featured in American museum and department store exhibitions during the 1920s, this model of bowl continued to be made for decades. Danish styling was so popular that American firms referenced Jensen’s expressive decoration in an effort to emulate its success.

It is credited Gift of Anonymous Donor.

A pitcher with a pear-like shape, molded from silver. The asymmetrical lip is an angle that is higher on the right and where liquid would be forthcoming. There is no featured spout. The handle emanates from the left side of the lip and gently ends above the base. The silver is stippled or gently hammered repeatedly with a planishing hammer creating repeated marks into a pattern.

The topmost part of this two-piece sterling, ivory and ebony candle set is scalloped and open and faces up, like a flower. On each candle cup is a monogram. Scalloped silver is then repeated but this time is facing downward and inward. Carved silver elements are above and below a vertically incised short length of ebony. Like its relative, the matching compote, this includes a small silver design with feathery curves and striated silver points that look something like a rather small loving cup. A wide piece of vertically carved ivory, one of which is quite cracked and yellowed, is above a silver element that has more feathery curves surrounding what looks like a squat pumpkin. This piece ends in silver components: more scalloping and scored balls with two little people or animals one on either side of each ball. Each candlestick sits on a wide, thin and flat round of silver.
