Brooch, 1990

This is a brooch. It was designed by Pavel Opočenský. It is dated 1990 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is colorcore formica, metal (pin). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In this brooch, Opočenský experimented with mass-produced ColorCore, a manmade material usually associated with domestic interiors. Here he transforms the material into an essay on geometry, color, and surface.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Its dimensions are

H x W x D: 8.9 × 8.9 × 0.6 cm (3 1/2 × 3 1/2 × 1/4 in.)

It has the following markings

On reverse: incised or stamped cypher of a P within an O.
