Textile, Campo Lindo

This is a Textile. It was designed by Larsen Design Studio and Anthony Ballatore and produced by Jack Lenor Larsen Incorporated. It is dated 1960 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is rayon, cotton, mohair and its technique is printed on twill weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Larsen Design Studio had extraordinary technical expertise, from woven to printed textiles, and Campo Lindo, designed by Anthony Ballatore, is no exception. A colorful landscape in orange, violet and green, Campo Lindo uses ten screens to produce a total of 27 color shades. The rich saturation of color benefited from the fibers used in the textile – specifically cotton and mohair. In an interview several years ago, Larsen expounded on how mohair takes the dye so well. The only negative side effect was that it takes several days to completely dry.
The artist and designer, Anthony Ballatore, designed at least two textiles for Larsen Design Studio: Campo Lindo and Tropic of Capricorn, which is also in the museum's collection (1973-54-3) and was part of Larsen’s Africa II Collection. Campo Lindo was used for upholstery, drapery, and wall covering.
