Photograph, Model II Picturephone®
This is a Photograph. It was designed by Henry Dreyfuss. It is dated ca. 1965 and we acquired it in 1972. It is a part of the Archives department.
The AT&T Picturephone is a classic example of Henry Dreyfuss’s streamlined style. It debuted at the 1964/1965 New York World’s Fair, touted as the future of communicaton. The Model II integrated new features: it was not only an early video calling mechanism, but could also be hooked up to a computer mainframe to share data in what might have been an early step toward the Internet—had it not been such a catastrophic commercial failure.
