Ensemble With Jacket, from Spring/Summer 2014 and Spring/Summer 2016 Ready-to-Wear collections

This is a Ensemble with jacket. It was designed by Melitta Baumeister.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Melitta Baumeister as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.

It is dated 2013. Its medium is padded neoprene, cast silicone, bonded nylon.

Melitta Baumeister creates clothing that exaggerates volume and plays with silhouette, often exploiting rigid materials and experimental techniques to create a protective enclosure around the body. These details are accentuated on this jacket through oversized shoulder pads, sharply lined edges, and zippers found in unexpected places. This dress exhibits a precarious balance between heaviness and lightness with lace cast in silicone at the bottom, contrasting with the lighter mesh fabric at the top.

It is credited Courtesy of Melitta Baumeister.
