This long, symmetrically ovoid vase is gold with white overlaid glass and simple circular lip and base. The middle of the vase is dedicated to an animal scene of elephants walking along a simple, white ground. The gold background makes up the sky, where the foreground is made of the white overlay and details of the elephants in relief. A realistic depiction, the two visible elephants with unfurled trunks walk in the same direction, following a third, half visible elephant body. In between the second and half visible elephant is stylized foliage in the same white relief overlay. The palm tree and accompanying bush both have pointy elements: pointy bark on the tree and on the shrub to the left. The leaves on the tree are large and open with pointed ends and slits on the side. Framing the top of the scene are swirling circular clouds behind the trees and stop just under the vertical lip. The lip has a single, solid line through the center and is a perfect circle on top of the oval vase.

Elephant Vase, 1918–31

This is a Elephant Vase. It was manufactured by Etablissement Gallé. It is dated 1918–31. Its medium is molded, carved and overlaid glass.

Artisans in the workshops of Émile Gallé and Daum Frères often chose naturalistic motifs depicting wild animals such as the elephants and gazelles carved on these examples from the 1920s.

It is credited Lent by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Gift of J. Brian and Varina Eby, 73.94.
