Born near Smolensk, Russia in 1886; died in 1946. Active in St. Petersburg, Paris and New York. Although schooled as a painter and studio artist, he achieved real fame as a stage designer, creating sets and costumes first in Moscow and St. Petrsburg, and then in Paris where he remained for two years before emigrating to NewYork in 1922.
