Textile, Gentle Poppies, 1954

This is a Textile. It was designed by Gandy Brodie and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Gentle Poppies is the work of Gandy Brodie, a self-taught artist associated with the second-generation abstract expressionist movement. Brodie first showed alongside Cy Twombly in New York and his ensuing career included numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, as well as acquisitions by museums including the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In Gentle Poppies, Brodie’s highly abstract and flattened blossoms appear in blue, white and black against a tan ground. The textile was used for a dress and blouse that appeared in Time magazine (June 13, 1955), among other publications. (1)

This design in this colorway is represented in the museum’s collection (1994-38-12).
