Drawing, Buick Tiger Concept Car, 1954

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Homer LaGassey and from the office of General Motors. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is brush and gouache, color pencil on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

LaGassey designed this concept for a Buick Tiger during his short tenure as an assistant stylist in the General Motors Buick Studio. LaGassey contributed to the production of Buick’s Wildcat car series, and it is likely that this rendition was a potential model.
The automobile has a burgundy upper body, a chrome lower body, and a black convertible roof, all distinguished by curvilinear forms. LaGassey places two shadowy figures inside the vehicle, and notwithstanding their indistinct forms, they encapsulate the artist’s consumer awareness. Behind the left front tire, LaGassey also includes three jets emitting orange flames, and a trail of black smoke, which highlight the car’s speed and performance. This concept drawing is reflective of LaGassey’s background in aeronautical design and highlights his skillful integration of mechanics and aesthetics.
