Mactron F1 Cigarette Lighter

This is a Cigarette Lighter. It was designed by Dieter Rams and manufactured by Braun AG. It is dated 1971 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is die-cast zinc, plated metal, plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This Mactron F1 lighter by Dieter Rams has a patented system by which the ignition rotates out of the contour of the lighter casing horizontally with the press of the user’s thumb, allowing the lighter to be operated single-handedly. Rams, who enjoyed designing lighters as small sculptural objects that were pleasing to look at and hold, thought through these placements, considering wrist and hand motion for comfort and use.

This object was donated by Robert Greenberg. It is credited Gift of Robert M. Greenberg.
