Drawing, Recto: The Ship of the Church; Verso: inscription refering to the receipt of payment from Luigi Alamanni for 'The portrait of Dante with the Inferno'

This is a drawing. It was created by Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus and made for (as the client) Luigi Alamanni and subject: Dante Alighieri. It is dated ca. 1590 and we acquired it in 1901. Its medium is black chalk, pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors.

H x W: 10.4 × 14.3 cm (4 1/8 × 5 5/8 in.)

It is inscribed

Verso: "di 11 giunio 158[.] / dette a bastiano di Sipriano lire 16½ a conto del vino .. / dua porto lui contanta / il lavaratore dal chavalero de patzi/ lire 16½ / 11 juni 158{.} / betaald aan Bastiano di Sipriano 16½ lire voor wijn... / hij brengt contant 2 lire / de werkman van Cvaliere de Pazzi / 16½ lire / E adi di giunio pagai io el strologho / Antonio lire dua p[er] manifatura duno / capelle dermosine e p[er] dua brascia de / nastra da mettere intorno in tutto lire 2 En op .. juni betaalde ik de astroloog Antonio twee lire voor het maken van een hoed en voor twee el lint eromheen in totaal 2 lire inscription in verso: E a di 3 di luglio mr Louigiallemane recho / lire 6 a conto del retratto de dante col inferno / E pago il reste lire 15. contanta"
