Drawing, Design for a Painted Porcelain Tray

This is a drawing. It was company: Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory and possibly by Jacques-François Micaud. It is dated ca. 1766 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is brush and watercolor, gouache, pen and brown ink, black chalk on cream laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.


Under the patronage of Louis XV, the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory became one of the most influential factories in Europe. Sèvres continuously produced fashionable new designs which were widely admired and imitated. This drawing shows the plan and elevation of a scalloped tray. From this design, factory mold-makers and decorators could produce multiple copies. An extant piece of enameled soft-paste porcelain made to this design is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors and from Eleanor G. Hewitt Fund.

Stamp in black ink, verso, Lugt 457d: Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration; Seal: portion of seal in red, upper right corner, verso: monogram "C.A."
