Sidewall (Germany), 1950–1956

This is a Sidewall. It was made by Marburger Tapetenfabrik. It is dated 1950–1956 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

The gestural nature of this pattern creates a casual feel which is typical of Kupferoth’s surface design, many of which appear to be strips of torn paper or crayon strokes. The seemingly random strokes of color are heightened by the large repeat, unusual for a machine-printed paper, which typically measures eighteen inches. Many of Kupferoth’s wallpapers were designed with coordinate papers meant to be used in the same or an adjoining room.

This object was donated by Marburger Tapetenfabrik. It is credited Gift of Marburger Tapetenfabrik.

Its dimensions are

107.5 x 56 cm (42 5/16 x 22 1/16 in.)

It is inscribed

Printed in left selvedge: "Marburg-Tapete Made in Western Germany", on right, "Entwurf Elsbeth Kupferoth 144".
