Mural, Smuggler's Cove
This is a Mural. It was manufactured by The Schmitz-Horning Co.. We acquired it in 1960. Its medium is chromo-lithographed. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This is one of five different mural maps designed by Glenn M. Shaw for Schmitz-Horning. The maps are said to be accurate and informative, with much research being done beforehand. The mural contains exotic plant life, natives drumming and dancing, while a sailor stands watch over treasure chests and rum. Tall ships, gulls and a mermaid occupy the sea. While all the maps were instructional the ones with pirates and tales of adventure were geared towards boys, but were also appropriate for the den or library. Schmitz-Horning began producing wallpapers in 1905. All of their papers were lithograph-printed which allowed them to be wiped clean.
This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Decorative Wall Map.
