Shawl (India), 1830–1850

This is a Shawl. It is dated 1830–1850 and we acquired it in 1966. Its medium is wool and its technique is twill tapestry weave. It is a part of the Textiles Department department.

The serpentine shapes that make up this pattern reveal how much the paisley cone stretched over time. The pattern of blue-green paisleys in the background is nearly obscured by an overlay of serpentine forms in off-white.

This object was donated by Mrs. Ruth R. Goddard. It is credited Gift of Ruth R. Goddard.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 265 × 126 cm (8 ft. 8 5/16 in. × 49 5/8 in.)
