Commode Chair Chair
This is a chair. It was made by N J Baudin. It is dated ca. 1750 and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is fruitwood, cane, leather, tin-glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Practicality was not overlooked in the development of specialized seat furniture in mid-eighteenth-century France. This chaise bidet à nécessaires was designed to be straddled; the leather-covered top of the caned chairback serves as an armrest; and hinges open compartments for toiletries.
