Patch Box Mounted With Miniatures (England)
This is a Patch box mounted with miniatures. It was created by John Miers. It is dated ca. 1785 and we acquired it in 1976. Its medium is cut ivory, raised and chased gold, gilt-metal, hair, velvet. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Silhouette painting became popular in the eighteenth century. This work by John Miers was painted, not cut. The hair in the three portraits was painted with a much more diluted pigment, lending the drawing a softness and variation. Three types of hair can be seen, each creating a pattern as delicate as the rendering itself.
