Shawl, ca. 1870

This is a Shawl. It is dated ca. 1870 and we acquired it in 1944. Its medium is wool and its technique is printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles Department department.

Overlapping hook-tip paisleys create movement around the border of this shawl. The design plays with opacity, revealing the outlines of hidden layers of paisleys underneath.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 160.5 x 174.5 cm (5 ft. 3 3/16 in. x 5 ft. 8 11/16 in.)
