Poster, Designtalk: Lecture Series at Cooper Union

This is a Poster. It was designed by Milton Glaser. It is dated 1996 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is lithograph on heavy white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Milton Glaser has shaped a distinctly American style of graphic design for over six decades since graduating from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1951. For his alma mater, Glaser produced this 1995 poster announcing a lecture series (to which he was the first of ten visiting designers) borrowing rational principles reminiscent of the Modernist style dominant in the early 20th century. In contrast, his gridded structure of multi-colored squares warps at the top and bottom edges. The effect is a convex image that brings a three-dimensionality to this two-dimensional work, creating an illusion of depth and an ambiguity between the real and the unreal. This deep-seated interest — seen in a number of Glaser posters collected by Cooper-Hewitt — is emblematic of the idea that contemporary posters can be viewed not only as simple tools of communication, but also as works of art.

This object was donated by Milton Glaser. It is credited Gift of Milton Glaser.
