Patchwork Quilt Top, Wild Goose Chase, 1825–1850

This is a Patchwork quilt top. It was made by Martha Brownlee. It is dated 1825–1850 and we acquired it in 1995. Its medium is cotton and its technique is pieced and sewn patchwork of printed and unprinted plain weave fabrics. It is a part of the Textiles Department department.

This object was bequest of Elinor Merrell. It is credited Bequest of Elinor Merrell.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 280 x 230cm (110 1/4 x 90 9/16in.)

It has the following markings

W (on front) and YOMING (on back) in gold FIN LONG CLO in blue and 36 YARDS on same square E TH in blue (forming FINE LONG CLOTH) RAFT A in blue, type similar to FINE LONG CLOTH G (on front)

It is inscribed

handwriting in ink on sewn on label "Made by Martha Brownlee born 1 Nov. 1801 Mother of Mary Brownlee Meloy
