Poster, Design Matters Live: Life, Love and the Pursuit of Design (AIGA San Francisco)
This is a Poster. It was designed by Marian Bantjes. It is dated 2007 and we acquired it in 2007. Its medium is off-set lithograph on mylar (trimmed). It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This poster is the culmination of Marian Bantjes’s design aesthetic. The transparency of the Mylar creates what Bantjes calls a “conversation” between front and back, allowing the typography to appear and disappear. The letters are ornamented with tightly curled “S” and “C” scrolls. Designed to accompany a four-part lecture series, this poster—according to Bantjes—is best experienced “live.”
A trend in contemporary design is the reexamination of the use of ornament as a counterpoint to the traditional clarity of the grid. Bantjes mines the history of calligraphy, type design, ornament, and oriental symbols and enlivens their compositions. Self-consciously autobiographical in tone, Bantjes' elaborate samplings of images, flourishes, and fonts take graphic design in a fresh new direction.
