Frieze (France)
This is a Frieze. It is dated ca. 1850 and we acquired it in 2007. Its medium is block printed on continuous paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This is a Gothic frieze with a deep perspective looking into a cloister or courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by pointed arches with trefoils, cluster columns, and a band of acanthus running across the top edge.
At the time of proposed acquisition, we have a small number of Gothic papers in the collection, which include several significant frieze and sidewall papers. This piece, which features strong Gothic architectural ornament and deep perspective, would greatly enhance our collection of mid-19th-century papers.
