Drawing, Study 102, Eleven Compositions for Ornamental Bands, General Foods Theme
This is a drawing. It was designed by John De Cesare. It is dated February 14, 1953 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is color pencil, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The artist is using here the actual techniques of composing music as the basis for organizing a visual design. By equating the musical elements of time and measure with the spaces and points on the graphs from the Annual Report (that is, the space between two points on a graph represents time, and the points themselves represent a measure) he created repeat-design motifs that were logically and coherently organized.
