Poster, Inner City Infill

This is a Poster. It was designed by Michael Bierut. It is dated 1985 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is lithograph on white. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Michael Bierut has a knack for translating three-dimensional concepts into two-dimensional pieces of graphic design. Inner City Infill displays the graphic designer’s skill at manipulating text for conceptual gain. Bierut’s solution was to stack type and add drop shadows, which suggest a sense of height, and are reminiscent of a crowded New York City block. His client, The New York State Council for the Arts, was seeking to promote its competition for new housing options in Harlem. This commission came early in his career; Bierut produced this work in 1985 while employed at Vignelli Associates in New York. Originally from Ohio, Bierut was hired by Massimo Vignelli’s firm one week after graduating from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. Vignelli had strict ideas about the use of typography, and it was at his studio that Bierut learned to communicate larger ideas through his principal’s parameters.

This object was donated by Michael Bierut. It is credited Gift of Michael Bierut.
