Poster, FD-1: Flocking Diplomats NYC 1999-2002 // Violations / Hour, designed January 2008
This is a Poster. It was graphic design by Joris Maltha and Daniel Gross and printed by Plaats Maken and firm: Catalogtree. It is dated designed January 2008 and we acquired it in 2009. Its medium is offset lithograph on white wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This is one of six posters in the Flocking Diplomats series. In each poster, data is translated into a graphic that maps the parking violations of diplomats in New York City. The posters are grounded in humor, both in the concept of tracking the diplomats’ transgressions and in the visual presentation of the information. Infographics—quantitative information that is visually displayed through graphs, charts, and other formats—highlight the immense volume of data available to us today as well as the subjective nature of its representation.
Catalogtree, the design team behind the Flocking Diplomats series, took their name from a technical term for the organizational structure of files within folders. In 1999, Joris Maltha and Daniel Gross founded Catalogtree while enrolled in Werkplaats Typographie, a two-year graphic design program in Arnhem, Netherlands. Their systematic approach to organizing information produces data that is graphic and imagery that is information. The designers are drawn to large data sets, which lend themselves to myriad interpretations.
Its dimensions are
100.2 x 68.9 cm (39 7/16 x 27 1/8 in.)
It is inscribed
